DESCRIPTION:
Together with the piston and the cylinder head, the cylinders of an internal combustion engine form the working and combustion chamber. This naturally becomes very hot due to the explosions that occur inside. Basically, this heat is transferred to the ambient air and the engine oil. This oldest and original form of air-oil cooling is commonly referred to as AC - Air Cooled. With this type of cooling, the available surface area is decisive, which is why the cylinders are usually surrounded by a large number of cooling fins. The system can be supplemented by additional air ducts to the cylinder/engine block, for example. In some cases, an (electric) fan is also installed in these ducts, which constantly draws in fresh air for cooling. In some vehicles, the heated engine oil is also passed through an extra air cooler for cooling. The second major type of engine cooling is cooling using coolant (LC - liquid cooled). Here, the engine block and especially the cylinders are flooded with "cooling water", which absorbs the heat and transports it to the outside where it is released into the ambient air via a radiator. This type of cooling is more efficient and allows considerably more freedom in the design of the entire vehicle due to the relatively free choice of radiator position. This is why liquid cooling has become the standard in many areas of vehicle construction.
